InfoSAWIT, JAKARTA -In the late days, Forest Watch Indonesia (FWI) did a study on the ISPO implementation. The study showed, for six years, since 2011, ISPO had no satisfied result to get the goals, as the certification system to realize sustainable palm oil plantation.

Based on FWI study, ISPO implementation still could not respond the negative influences which rised from palm oil development for years, namely the social and environmental aspects. The certification system which is hoped to be the improvement in the area and plantation is only an instrument to be confessed by the international markets.

Until now, the stakeholders keep debating that ISPO could be the answer for the fulfillment of sustainable principles or not. In the wider perception, some sides are doubtful that ISPO could solve the root of the problem to improve the area and forest management in Indonesia.

In addition, crude palm oil (CPO) has become the biggest exchange to the country together with oil and gas, coal, and tourism industries. But in the last years, from what FWI studied, the tax from palm oil plantation keeps decreasing. The weak palm oil plantation becomes one indication that the world markets concern about the social and environmental aspect which the troubled concession area produced CPO in Indonesia.

The concern is hoped to be the answer from the publication of ISPO as the instrument to sustainability of social and environment in 11,6 million hectares of palm oil plantation within the total production more than 34 million tons of CPO in 2016.

ISPO is hoped to ensure that CPO in Indonesia is environmental, derives from the clean and clear areas, free from deforestation and tenure conflicts. In the end, ISPO should actually be the mainstay to get the people’s trust back, increase the competitiveness in the world markets, and keep the commitment of Indonesia to reduce the global emission.

Executive Director of FWI, Soelthan G. Nanggara told, if ISPO is a sustainable scheme in palm oil plantation, is it strong enough? Based on his mind, though ISPO has been running, but the deforestation keeps happening. For example, in 2009 to 2013, it was suspected, about 500 thousand hectares of the natural forest were vanished. “There might be 127 violations in the court in plantation sector. The numbers are based on the agrarian reformation,” he said. (T2)
