THE OPPORTUNITY TO EMPOWER SUSTAINABLE STANDARD

AS ONE SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL CULTIVATION PLATFORM, ROUNDTABLE ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL (RSPO) SHOULD KEEP IMPROVING ITS QUALITY AS THE COMMITMENT TO PRODUCE SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL IN THE WORLD.

The planters suddenly astonished when palm oil resolution emerged, summarized in ‘Palm Oil and Deforestation of Rainforests’ which was published by Environment, Public Health, Food Security Committee of European Union in March 2017. Palm oil is thought as the factor of deforestation. This is the reason why palm oil biodiesel will be decreased to use until 2020.

RSPO thought, palm oil resolution by European Union could be the chance for many sides to show their commitment to improve the sustainability aspect. “This is the opportunity to do better,” Director of RSPO Indonesia, Tiur Rumondang recently said in Jakarta.

It is non-appeal resolution which means, the legal process will be in phase before it could be the basic reason to make policy in European Union.

Tiur convinced, RSPO as the non-profit organization which focuses to improve the palm oil management and cultivation in the world has the standard schemes in sustainable production which have run well. But RSPO also gets the critics to the criteria and gap when implementing the standards, and will keep cooperating with many sides, both the certification institutions, industries, and the civil to increase its obedience towards the standards.

Based on the information from ‘Palm Oil and Deforestation of Rainforests’, what European Union does is the same with the spirit of Amsterdam Declaration.on 7 December 2015, that is, to reduce deforestation by selecting agricultural commodity stocks in European countries.

The declaration fully supported sustainable palm oil supply to European Union in 2020 and supported to cut off the deforestation chain in 2020.

Not only excuse to stop of the deforestation chain, the resolution also discussed about the model of certification which runs in sustainable palm oil in the world.

In the report sustainable palm oil certification schemes, such as, Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO), and Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) become the standards promoting the production by sustainable cultivation within many criteria adjusted to the social and ecological principles.
