THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BMP IN MINERAL AREA

implementing Best Management Practices (BMP) in the mineral area is to maintain the productivity higher, besides making the cultivation process easier. but there should be known in implementing bmp in mineral area.

Though palm oil is easy enough to enlarge, and it does not need complicated technic, but it is better to know the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMP), namely for palm oil which is planted in the mineral area.

In his personal blog, Vice Director of PT Sasaran Ehsan Mekarsari, Arie Malangyudo shares about palm oil cultivation, that is, the implementation of BMP in the mineral area.

But before going further about the BMP application in the mineral area, it needs to know first, the land or area classification –  the flatand tilt areas. Arie wrote, the flat area could be seen from its tilt which reaching 50 (1:12). If the tilt reaches 50 to 80 or  (1:12) until (1:7), the area could be said a little bittilt.

If the tilt reaches 80 to 140, the area is said the tilt one and the area will be said as steep if it has more than 140 or even more than that.

For the farmers who want to cultivate palm oil, the first thing to know is the areal tilt. If the area is flat, it will not be difficult to cultivate. But what if the area is tilt?

For the farmers having the tilt area, they should make the area terrace which is 2,5 in width along the contour mechanically. This is done to short cut the length of the contour and decrease the erotion. The length of the contour which is made to be the terrace is more less about 30 – 40 meters. The site to plant.is 2,4 m x 1,8 m.

Why should the terrace be made in the tilt area? Arie noted, though in the tilt area, the heavy tools could be used, but it needs to make the terrace. The terrace is usually made within the horizontal distance among every terrace reaching 7,9 meters and 9,2 meters. The lowest part of the land should be dug, reaching 6,5 meters.

The width of the Terrace Contour reaches about 3,6 meters – 4,2 meters and the behind part should be dug reaching 60cm so that the area could be used to pile up the front part of the terrace and will be higher from the behind part. This form or shape functions to sustain the erotion,

The terrace should be done after the making of the way so that the water which is from the way/street could be flow to the terrace. The double terrace is considerable so that the four vehicle could pass through.

In the steep area, the heavy tools will not be usefull to operate. So there should be terrace in 2,4 x 1,8 meters within the depth of the digging is not more than 0,3 meters. The common problem in the area is the land erotion or slide. Silt Pits needs to be made in the waving tilt area, namely to the kind of laterit land.

The recomended measure (look Picture : The Making of Silt Pits) is length 6meters x the width 0,6 m x depth 0,6 meter. Silt Pits should be made as same as tilt area within the 4 palm oil trees as the interval which decline the tilt. Pay attention to the ‘way to lift’ so that it will not be disturbed, it will obstacle the harvesting process. At least, once in 3 years, silt pits should be added by sand.

Making the Area Remain Fertile
