Palm oil producers are focusing to vasten the seeding process to make unique superiority and produce palm oil seeds in a relative short time if it is compared to the conventional way which produced fruit after 15 to 20 years.
Implementing net culture technics, the seeds producer will have less than 5 years to get superior seeds as what is needs.
Then, when this technics is implemented to get palm oil commodity? Referring to Balai Besar Bioteknologi & Sumber Daya Genetik Pertanian, the multipication research through net culture has been done for more than three decades, which has been pioneered by ORSROM – Institute de Recherches pour les Huiles et Oleagineux (IRHO)/CIRAD French and Unilever, England.
After than, the technology of palm oil multiplication is done by regeneration through somantic embryogenesis.
In the future, especially for the forestry plants and other wood plants, the multiplication through somatic embryogenesis will keep running especially for the production of somatic seeds. The seeds produced in one place in a certain time will be more than the seeds produced in the other ways of multiplication seeds.
To support the plantation breeding programme, especially the genetic engineering, somatic embryogenesis is better to do because the plant could derive from one somatic cell so it gives a higher result and decreases the risk to make “Chimera”.
In Indonesia, the research of net culture technics has begun since 1986 which was pioneered by Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit (PPKS) Medan. The first clone as the result of the net culture technics was planted since 1987 in some regions, such as, Cot Girek, Sawit Seberang, Tinjowan, Bah Jambi, Aek Loba, Perlabian, Sisumut, Kembayan, and Luwuk, which were in North Sumatera
It was good. The productivities increased 30 – 35% than the homogen. From the experiment, PPKS found the net culture technics to producehigh productive seeds than it in the conventional technics.
