releasing orangutan becomes something to concern for the limited protected forest. searching the new areas is finally done. one of it is by the initiative done by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) in collaboration with PT sawit sumbermas sarana, tbk. salat island becomes a paradise for orangutan.
28 kilometers from Palangkaraya, there is a rehabilitation center managed by Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) in cooperation with ‘Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA)’ in Central Kalimantan Province. It is known as Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center for orangutan, in Village of Tangkiling, Sub district of Bukit Batu, Palangkaraya.
Nyaru Menteng lies about 466 hectares in three different locations but near to the other. They are Nyaru Menteng 1 lies about 68 hectares, Nyaru Menteng 2 lies about 98 hectares, and Nyaru Menteng 3 lies about 300 hectares. 448 orangutans are being rehabilitated. Each location is used to the process of rehabilitation until the orangutan could be back in the wild.
Based on BOSF, 55% of orangutans which are in rehabilitation process are male. 23 of them are babies less than 3 years old, and 60% of them are about 7 years old.
Manager of Nyaru Menteng, Denny Kurniawan said, there have been many orangutans, ready to be released. Days before BOSF still relied on the pre-release islands that BOSF had, they were, Kaja, Bengawat, and Palas islands. Unfortunately the three locations have been settled by orangutans too.
Many orangutans should be released but no ideal location to release them. Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center should actually be lived by 300 orangutan. But it is now a place for 448 orangutans.
CEO BOSF, Jamartin Sihite said, his side has released some orangutans. For example in 2015 to 2017, BOSF has released 270 orangutans. But because of some problems, about 200 orangutans could not be released. It is also said, 677 orangutans are still in the Nyaru Menteng rehabilitation center in Semboja, East Kalimantan.
His side has tried to tell this issue . . .
