PALM OIL EMPLOYEES SHOULD THE EMPLOYES BE IMPORTED?
NEED TO SIMPLIFY MANY SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATIONS22 January 2016 , 06:42 WIB | Read : 789 | By : Agus Purnomo
PALM OIL INDUSTRIES SHOULD PASS MANY SUSTAINABility CERTIFICATIONs AS THE FORMs OF CONFESSION THAT THE PALM OIL PRODUCTIONS DO NOT DERIVE FROM DAMAGING WAYS. BUT THERE ARE MANY KINDS OF CERTIFICATIONS. SO THEY should be SIMPLIFIED
Actually, there have been many kinds of scheme in palm oil certifications. This potentially makes the schemes weak to be monitored. For example, the conflict in Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA). It thought, there are much weakness in Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) standards because there is no institution monitoring the audit process. This probably makes the company get the certification but in the real fact, it is not so.
Many kinds of certification models should be improved bythe certification itself. But if in the future, the new model comes up, it will be legal too. What should be considered is that the planters will have more burden to get the certifications.
The farmers are not included in the planters. The big palm oil planters have no big deal with the certification models. But what about the palm oil farmers? It will make more complex and complicated problems if they should have kinds of certification.
So it is better to simplify the schemes of certification to make one standard only. They who campaign the environmental issues could discuss and harmonize the issue so that there will be one certification but it can access everything. It means, there are environmental standards to get in the certification. It should not make the plantation cultivation standards for they are different on to another.
Certification is not to value or validate the performance in the plantation areas. The certification could be high or low. For example, the legal standing of the certification has put the legality certification. They should not measure the plantation efficiency but measure the fulfilment of the legality in the company(ies). If everything has been got, they will get the certification.
This model of certification does not measure the footprint carbon or water footprint. It relates to the consumers’ preference, so there will be new additional certification model. If every model of certification is got, imagine, how much extra money will be spent to get additional certification on one commodity.
So it is important to do, if, the first, to re- consider and to review, do we need many models of certification in one plantation commodity? The second, the implemented or existing standards should be reviewed.
It needs to be done because talking and discussing about environmental impact, environmental related performance, environment management, the standards should be running. For example, for the legality standards, the plantation companies should have environmental analysis, plantation business license, is the business licence good or not? Is the environmental analysis fake or not? Everything should be investigated. It is admitted or not, the environmental analysis documents are got from the other companies by copying them.
The quality of the standards should be improved. The critics from EIA for RSPO, for example, should be running for every certi . . .
