FARMERS INFO - KNOWING AND SOLVING GANODERMA - Prevent Palm Oil “Cancer”

Basal stem root disease was firstly found in Zaire (Kongo) in 1915. This disease was not making damage so it did not need special treatment in the beginning. But five years later, in 1920, the same thing happened in West Africa. Besides both countries, in 1977, there were lots of plantations in other countries having the same disease.

They are in Angola, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, San Tome, Principe, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. But the cases in the African countries, Ganoderma just attacked wild palm oil plantations in the forests. Malaysian palm oil plantations were hit by this disease for the first time in 1931 – the disease attacked 25 year old plantations. By that time, ganoderma was not taken as one harmful disease. But the next few years ganoderma was found in palm oil plantations in Indonesia. This disease was togetherly coming by in several other countries, such as, Honduras, Central America in 1993, in 1997 in Papua New Guinea, in 1998 in Thailand and in 2009 in Papua.

In Indonesia and Malaysia for special, ganoderma was fast to grow because the climate was good to cultivate palm oil plantation massively. According to Palm oil Research Center or Pusat Penelitian Kelapa Sawit, ganoderma was predicted to attack the productive plants only.
